Valerie Strauss says recess is serious business

Washington Post columnist Valerie Strauss wrote an excellent article about the importance of recess.  “Play matters but too many schools don’t give kids a chance to enjoy themselves,” she said. She included a story  told by Jill Vialet, the chief executive officer of Playworks, a national nonprofit organization that supports learning by providing safe, healthy and inclusive play and physical activity to schools at recess and throughout the entire school day.

I posted a comment saying that Fairfax County does not take recess seriously at all– the elementary schedules allow only 10 minutes per day for recess.
